Wham Bam Big Band
Auditions
Looking to join WHam bam?
While the Wham-Bam Big Band is a student-run group, auditions are required for entry. However, auditions are open to everyone, including instruments that fall outside traditional big band instrumentation! Our auditions process is not intense, but admittance to the band is not guaranteed.

RETURNING OR PAST MEMBERS DO NOT NEED TO RE-AUDITION!
For any questions regarding the audition requirements and/or process, email whambam@wm.edu.

THE INFORMATION BELOW IS CURRENT AS OF 8/9/2025:

Requirements for auditions are as follows:
Firstly, you must be able to attend our rehearsals. The Big Band rehearses from 6:30 - 8:00 PM on Sundays in the Music Building.

1. a short (minimum 16 bars, no more than 64) prepared jazz excerpt of your choosing. If you don't have an excerpt to prepare, online databases like IMSLP are great resources for free music of all kinds.
2. 16-32 measures of sight reading.
3. Additionally, be prepared to answer questions about past involvement in jazz and music in general. These questions won't be in-depth, but it's helpful to know how experienced potential members are.
While it is important to show up prepared to this audition, keep in mind that Wham Bam has members coming from a variety of musical backgrounds and is open to those who wish to learn more. Don’t sweat it!
